When I heard of Donna Summer’s passing, not only was it a shock, but I was truly saddened by the end of an era that was so abruptly taken. Her music was contagiously alive. Whether at a wedding, a club or the hours (I) spent in a dance studio training to her music, you can’t help but smile and let go.

There’s no doubt that the 70′s brought the most growth to fashion and style. The sexiness and liberation of the 70′s woman is still reflected today. Rachel Zoe built an empire on recreating the era.

Although it’s always unsettling when a death of a giant happens, it’s comforting to know that their legacy lives on. RIP Donna. xoxo

Nailing It

Mani/Pedi’s, to me, have always kind of been a necessary evil. No doubt that sitting back and having a relaxing 40 minutes is a welcome break to the day, but am I the only one that constantly panics thinking that fungus is going to take over my existence? I love a freshly done manicure. Short, cuticle free nails has an almost freeing effect. The bummer is that’s it’s an ongoing process that at the 10 day mark dragon nails start appearing, not making for a cute look.

Nail art and colors have come a long way. Not only is it an easy way to show your personality, but nails have become their own fashion statement. Recently the “accent” nail has become another choice in the infinite possibility process. I’m not quite sure how I feel about it. Anything in your early 20′s is cute, but start getting into your 30′s, and it can begin to look a little wrong. Either way it’s not a permanent decision. Maybe adding a little leopard while giving the finger won’t look so offensive. xoxo

Blazing!

Lately I’ve been pretty bored with my wardrobe. There are days that I stare aimlessly at my closet muttering “I have nothing to wear.” I don’t really understand it. I make conscious purchases, timely edits and somehow I can’t find anything worthy. Maybe those are days I’m PMS-ing. FYI not the days to go out and buy clothing. Guaranteed you’ll come home with a pair of fuschia gauchos that you’ve been made to believe are next season’s must have.

With that said, a good solution to the uninspired moment is a blazer. A clean, well cut blazer makes everything from a pair of holey jeans to a summer skirt look and feel new again. Be aware of the variety of blazers out on the market. Boyfriend, cropped, linen, wool, colored even sequin can be found from J Crew to Isabel Marant. Keep in mind your lifestyle and persona. Buying a satin, big shoulder blazer might not be the look you’re going for at the baseball field.;) xoxo

I thought that with Mother’s day coming up profiling some fashionable mom’s would be appropriate. I know we’ve all heard it, “being a mom is hard work.” Not only is it emotionally taxing, it’s physically exhausting. Getting dressed usually takes a backseat to organizing breakfast and getting out the door. Although a mom’s lifestyle is grounded in realistic dressing, finding our own sense of style and “chicness” is not impossible. Keeping clean lines and simple silhouettes, will undoubtably help keep our sanity. Happy Mother’s Day. xoxo

Australia Fashion Week is coming to a close, and although New York is looked at as the fashion capital of the world, the fashions down under don’t disappoint. I find most of my inspiration from people on the streets and there’s no better place than on the streets of [any] fashion week. Derby Day!

One of my favorite events [ever] is the Kentucky Derby. Not only for the over the top fashions, but I find the race and the stories incredibly compelling. We always hear about the struggles and triumphs of athletes through out the year, but being that the derby is a single event it makes it that much more exciting.

The day is whimsical, a bit fantasy and incredibly liberating, and that is reflected in the styles worn. Whether you’re sipping champagne in the box seats or jumping with excitement down below, the day filled with corky hats and colorful dresses makes for a chic, lifelong memory. Can’t wait!! xoxo

Sandal season is upon us and it’s a welcome change out of boots. From flip flops to wedges, sandals have a wide spectrum to choose from. Although each style seems to have a go to look that works best, I’m partial to a flat, gladiator-esque shoe. I love the diversity a flat sandal has. From short skirts to skinnies, long skirts to shorts, a flat sandal earns it’s keep. Now if only I could be 5’10…xoxo

Psychology of Fashion?

Does what we wear affect our state of mind? Can our outfit alter how we approach and interact with the world? According to a recent study published in The Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, subjects that wore coats [supposedly] from doctors, performed better on tests than those dressed in street clothes, or those who thought that their coat was from an artist. There’s no doubt that wearing beautiful fabrics and having designers items can makes us feel “good.” But how deeply rooted are these thoughts that they can affect our cognitive process? Apparently there is a name for it, enclothed cognition. If our brain thinks that intelligent, powerful women dress in a certain designer, we are more likely to take on those characteristics when wearing that designer. Isn’t that crazy!?

Honestly, it’s all just too psychological for me. I try not to take it that seriously. Here’s my process, I like it, I buy it, I wear it. Psychological or not, we all need clothes so that we’re not walking the streets naked. Wether you’re drawn to Gucci or Target, try not to make choices off of perceptions of what types of people are wearing what designers. I may need a head shrink for the many monkeys I have in my head, but for how I’m shopping?…. I may just be creating a better version of myself. LOL That’s what I’ll tell my husband. xoxo
